Croasdaile Rehearsal/Concert

This is a reminder that we will NOT be at the DAC on March 30, due to the rehearsal and concert at Croasdaile this coming week. Also, THERE WILL NOT BE A REHEARSAL ON APRIL 6, DUE TO THE DPS SPRING BREAK. We will resume rehearsals on April 13.

Next week's rehearsal, March 30, will be held at Croasdaile Retirement Village, located across from Hillandale Elementary School, at the corner of Hillandale Rd. and Croasdaile Farm Parkway. We will follow this schedule:

4:30 Rehearsal in Ponder Auditorium at Croasdaile
6:00 Supper (Croasdaile will provide sandwiches, chips and lemonade)
6:40 Change into DCC polos and black pants
7:00 Valentine's Concert for residents of Croasdaile Village
8:00 Dismissal

Parents, please let me know if you can provide any of the items listed below. I had the original list of volunteers for parent assistance; however, since two parents have already informed me of changes in their schedules it would help to start a new list of volunteers for supper items and for parent assistance. See below for details:

Parent assistance needed: send fruit or dessert items for the supper. Also, we will need a few parents to assist with organizing, serving and clean-up for the supper and monitoring singers as they change into outfits.

Directions: Croasdaile Village is located on Hillandale Rd. across the street from Hillandale Elementary School. From I-85, go north on Hillandale Rd.; go through one stoplight (Carver St.). After approx. 1/2-3/4 mile, take a left onto Croasdaile Farm Parkway, then turn left onto the 2nd Wesley Chapel Dr. (Main entrance). Turn left at the signs to the Village Commons. Drive under the covered Main Entrance and drop off your children; someone will be there at the Main Desk to escort them to the Auditorium. You may park in the area near the Village Commons. If you are not planning to attend the concert, please make sure you pick up your children no later than 8:15 PM at the Main Entrance. Please allow Croasdaile residents to take seats closest to the stage.
Directions to the Auditorium: Go into the Main Entrance; after signing in, pass the library and continue straight ahead to the main hallway. Turn left, then follow the hall way around to the auditorium, which will be on your left.

Instructions for Tree-Lighting

The Durham Parks and Rec. Department have sent this information: the Holiday Parade and Tree-Lighting Ceremony are "Rain or Shine!" There is no alternate date. However, if there is a huge storm such as the one we had Wednesday, they will obviously cancel the event and call me immediately. Therefore, here are your final instructions:

1. Be at the stage in Market Square at 5:00 PM on Saturday.
2. Dress for the weather: white turtle neck or sweater, red DCC vest, black pants, warm black socks and shoes, mittens, scarves, Santa hat (if you have one, or bring an extra to share if you have more than one!), warm jackets. IF the weather permits, we will take off the outer jacket while we sing (but leave on the gloves, mittens, hats).
3. If we have a bad storm, check here for further instructions, or as a last resort, call Mrs. Hill.

Their mission is to learn a wide variety of high quality choral music, both sacred and secular, and to share that music with the community through public performances. The choir was founded by Scott Hill, retired DPS choral director, in May, 2004, with generous support from the Durham Arts Council, Duke University Chapel Music, Durham Public Schools, the BIN Charitable Foundation, the American Tobacco Campus and individuals from the community.

The choir performs regularly at Duke Chapel, American Tobacco Historic District festivals, NC School of Science and Math for Voices for Education, the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and other local community events. This past season the choir was invited to perform with the NC Symphony in Cary's Koka Booth Ampitheatre, at the Biltmore House in Asheville and at Duke University in a joint concert with the Onllwyn Welsh Men's Choir.

Summer Youth Program

ARTSCENTER AND PLAYMAKERS CREATE
SUMMER YOUTH CONSERVATORY

The ArtsCenter, in partnership with PlayMakers Repertory Company, will offer a Summer Youth Conservatory program for young actors, age 8-18 to produce the musical OLIVER! This summer, a cast of 40 young actors will have the chance to rehearse and perform in a professional theatre space – PlayMakers’ main stage, the Paul Green Theatre.

This is a rare theatre experience for young people; an educational and performance opportunity that includes working with a professional director (who is being flown in from Los Angeles by PlayMakers to direct this production) a choreographer and a musical director. All rehearsals and performances will be held at PlayMakers Repertory Company, the leading professional theatre in the Carolinas.

In addition to rehearsing and performing the musical OLIVER!, participants will also take classes taught by PlayMakers company members Julie Fishell and Kathryn Hunter Williams – both professional actors, covering acting technique and dialect. With lights, sound design, set, and costumes provided by PlayMakers, this Summer Youth Conservatory production of OLIVER! will provide a rich theatre experience for cast and audience alike.

PlayMakers and The ArtsCenter particularly encourage young actors in the community (non-equity) with passion and skill, age 14-18, to audition for the leads of Nancy, Fagin and Bill Sykes.

Los Angles based director; Tom Quaintance will direct this production of OLIVER!
Mr. Quaintance has worked on the Broadway productions of The Who’s TOMMY and HOW TO SUCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING with Matthew Broderick, among many other credits. He is very experienced with youthful casts.

For the final 40 members of the OLIVER! cast, five-weeks of intensive rehearsals and classes begin on June 11, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Rehearsals will culminate in three performances of OLIVER! on July 13, 14 and 15. Cast members will be expected to attend all rehearsals (with July 4th off only). Tuition is $1000/actor, with scholarships available, based on financial need.

AUDITION INFOMATION

Two rounds of auditions will be held. Initial auditions for community actors (8-18) will take place February 19, 2007, 6:00 p.m. at PlayMakers located in the Center for Dramatic Art, Country Club Road on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. Second auditions for community actors and first auditions for Youth Performing Arts Conservatory students, will take place February 24, 2007 beginning at 9:00 a.m. with Mr. Quaintance. Callbacks are scheduled from 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 25, 2007. Mr. Quaintance can see a maximum of 70 young actors at audition.

All community actors wishing to audition must be available, as needed, for all three of the above audition dates and times.

A current photograph must accompany the information sheet (a recent school picture is fine.) For auditions, actors will need to bring in a prepared monologue or poem and 16-bars of an up-beat, Broadway-style song (along with sheet music for their selection.)

Audition applicants will be contacted after receipt of information sheet and photograph to confirm call times for all audition sessions.

This recently established collaboration between PlayMakers and The ArtsCenter was a theatrical marriage waiting to happen! The ArtsCenter is home to the very successful Youth Performing Arts Conservatory, an in-depth acting program for 250 students. Explaining the Summer Youth Conservatory program with PlayMakers, Jon Wilner, Executive Director of The ArtsCenter comments,

“Many of our students are ready for a challenging production experience. We have committed, talented young actors who are ready to perform at a high level. Partnering with PlayMakers, who have such a wealth of acting and production experience and excellence, as well as such a beautiful rehearsal and performance facility, will give our students this opportunity.”

"PlayMakers is thrilled to partner with The ArtsCenter to provide an opportunity for our region's young people," said Joseph Haj, PlayMakers producing artistic director. "The ArtsCenter is a great community resource that provides an artistic outlet for many Triangle residents. PlayMakers is committed to community outreach through unique collaborations such as this. The ArtCenter and PlayMakers staff will make the Summer Youth Conservatory a terrific opportunity for both organizations to shine."

This production will be cast by audition only and is open to both conservatory and non-conservatory students alike.

Please take all the parts of your uniform out of the bags when you get home, try them on and make sure they are ironed for Sunday. Keep them ALL TOGETHER on hangers in your closet, preferably in a plastic dry cleaners bag or garment bag. (The black ties like to escape, so make sure you keep them with the rest of the outfit!) This uniform will be known as your formal attire; the red polo and black pants is your casual attire.

You'll notice that the red vests have not arrived. As soon as they come in, we'll have the logo sewn on and then distribute them. Please wear your red polo shirt with the new black pants or skirt on Sunday.

The total cost for your new uniform is $50. Please bring your payment to next week's rehearsal if possible. Checks are made payable to Durham Children's Choir or DCC. If you prefer to mail your payment, please send checks to:

Christmas Eve

Please try to have the children arrive at the Chapel NO LATER THAN 4:40! I would suggest you try for 4:30 or earlier, as I am told the Chapel fills up rather quickly for this service. If you are having trouble parking AT LEAST LET THE CHILDREN COME ON IN to warm-up for the service. The best place to park is in the deck near the Bryan Center, but GET THERE EARLY!

(By the way, this IS a church service, so there should be no applause after they sing!)

The children should be dressed for the performance in their complete outfit. They were shown where we'll meet at the Tuesday rehearsal. If they forget, someone will show them where to go. We sing our first two selections at around 5:15. The other selections will be sung during the 1-hour service. Coats will stay downstairs, and we'll pick them up after the service.

See you tomorrow.
